What is the Difference Between Happiness and Joy?

by | Self Care

It is important for people to find joy in their lives because joy is a state of being that is cultivated within. Joy doesn’t exist outside of us. Most people confuse temporal happiness with joy. The difference between joy and happiness is that joy does not need to have a reason attached to it for its existence. People can simply be joyful, which is a state of ease and contentment. Happiness, on the other hand, is fleeting and externally focused. It comes and it goes and there’s often a story involved.

The benefits of joy in our lives include an enhanced sense of wellbeing and an ease with which we operate in the world. When we are joyful, we don’t interest ourselves in trying to change others or getting our way. We are not dependent on other people to fill our needs because we know we can meet our own. Joyful people are those who can show compassion and happiness for others without losing their own sense of wellbeing.
