Do You See Me?
Do you even know my name
What are all the labels you use when you see my face?
What color do you categorize my skin?
Melanin is a beautiful thing
We all have it
Why do you put all these labels on me without even knowing me?
How long must I prove my worth
And why does yours come “free”
I feel sorry for the spell of disease you are under
The disease that doesn’t see me
Flesh to flesh
I’m still a human to touch
Remember when we used to be friends on the playground
Carefree and living in love
Do you see me?
I’m still the same person
Even after all of this history we’ve shared
I wish for you to be freed from your disease
If you don’t see me
Then you don’t see you
And you clearly don’t see the Me that resides within You
